Outdoor Wall Lanterns are an easily installed and low-cost way to welcome your guests as well as enhancing security on your property. Cost, ease of install, security and style are all important to consider when using outdoor lighting to design your “lightscape”.

Another consideration is the physical characteristics of the landscape itself.

When you are considering installing outdoor lighting, you will need to take stock of the places on your property that will benefit the most from illumination. The best time to assess possible locations will be when lighting is needed most; at night. So bring out your flashlight and use it to light up different areas of your landscape. This should give you some ideas as to which spots you will place certain lights. Some places will need to be brightened so-as to provide security it at night. Others will be illuminated for strictly aesthetic reasons.

Trees, walkways, walls and posts make excellent places to install outdoor lanterns. Each point of installation offers different options in lighting techniques.

Three outdoor lighting techniques, for installing outdoor wall lanterns, that can be used are;

  • Downlighting
  • Uplighting
  • Backlighting

Downlighting simulates the sun or moon’s rays and  is best used for places that are security concerns such as driveways, walkways and stairs

Backlighting is designed to create a silhouette of the object you are intending to display. This is typically done by placing a light which faces away from the object and shines a light on a wall, fence or structure which lies behind the focal object.

Uplighting is accomplished by lighting objects from below. This is done to give the object more depth as the light plays on its surface.
