Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting

Do you have a landscape and are not using low voltage outdoor lighting to light it up at night?

You might think about adding them as an option when you get ready for your low voltage landscape lighting project next Spring. Lets face it, not all low voltage landscape lights are alike. You could go with very bright designs or with subtle lighting that provides a pleasing warm light.

It is best, when designing your “lightscape”, to mix and match the different types of outdoor lighting to avoid your landscape from looking like a ride at the county carnival. To help you avoid this, you will need to consider the change in vegetation so that you can properly mix the lighting and move it to accent the proper areas over time.

One low-cost way to ease installation and adapt to changing vegetation growth is to install low voltage outdoor lighting (which uses a transformer to convert the 120volts from your house to 12volts which can be easily used by the lighting fixtures).

Low voltage outdoor lighting systems consist of at least three components;

  • the transformer (or power pack)
  • the low voltage cable
  • the low voltage lamp (or light fixture)

Low voltage lighting is flexible and easy to use. These outdoor lights can be easily moved as plants grow and do not require extensive electrical knowledge to install ( following the installation guides should be sufficient). In fact, most installations can be finished within an hour or two while using only a screwdriver. Its so easy to install that low voltage garden lights are a very popular choice for homeowners trying to spruce up their landscape.

One additional consideration is that low voltage outdoor lighting is shockless and therefore safe around children and pets.

When considering the ease of installation, low-cost and safety issues, low-voltage outdoor lighting is a very attractive option for you to consider when installing your landscape lighting.
